If you work at a traditional company, listening to AI power users rave about Claude Opus, Fable, or ChatGPT over the past year has probably felt a little like being gaslit.

While those of us who get to pick our own tools spend all day yapping about agents that can refactor a codebase or act as a developmental editor, helping shape a draft’s structure and argument, most people don’t get to choose which frontier model they use at work. Their company is locked into Microsoft Copilot or uses Google tools as one of the more than 13 million organizations paying for Google Workspace for everyday work, or the nearly 90 percent of the Fortune 100 using Gemini Enterprise to draw on company knowledge and automate workflows. And if your only window into AI has been the Gemini model bundled into your work account, you haven’t seen anything close to what the frontier model companies have been doing. While Anthropic and OpenAI spent the spring and summer trading heavyweight releases, Google hadn’t shipped a major upgrade to its flagship model since Gemini 3 Pro last November (followed by a minor 3.1 Pro bump in February), spending the summer rolling out four rapid-fire updates to Flash—its faster, lower-cost model line—while its promised Gemini 3.5 Pro stayed in testing.

With Gemini 4 Argon, released today by Google DeepMind, Google is back in the frontier conversation.
