More and more AI labs seem to be pulling back from open source.

Qwen is moving in a more closed direction. Meta is basically fully closed. MiniMax 2.7 does not allow commercial use.

Honestly, this is understandable. Open-source foundation models are very different from open-source software. Training costs are massive, and labs do not get as many clear upside benefits from releasing model weights.

Instead of blaming them, we should make open source more sustainable by helping labs monetize it, through things like revenue sharing.

Open source AI has to be sustainable to win.
