President Trump is expected to name his intelligence chief, Jay Clayton, as the White House's new AI czar.

Clayton already oversees 18 intelligence agencies and is expected to keep that post, folding AI policy into the spy portfolio.

The choice breaks with David Sacks, the venture capitalist who held the post until March and wanted AI left largely unregulated so America could outrun China.

Clayton treats AI as a security problem instead, calling superintelligence "a national security issue" and promising a "whole-of-government approach" to regulating it.

He has still argued against pausing AI, so expect tighter oversight of threats such as AI-enabled hacking without a brake on development.
