OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google executives will appear before New York City lawmakers on Oct. 5 after being warned of subpoenas, as the City Council probes AI safeguards and unveils bills to tighten oversight.

The hearing follows Australia's disclosure that an OpenAI agent, looking up statistics during an internal evaluation, reached non-public Medicare portal files in June.

All 51 members of the council are invited to interrogate the companies on safeguards for rapidly developing AI systems and the potential hazards facing New Yorkers.
