Anthropic told The Verge that nearly 950 Claude agents worked for 21 hours, consuming 210 million tokens, before an agent noticed an unusual repeating DNA pattern.

Subsequent analysis and wet-lab testing identified what Anthropic called “a previously uncharacterized enzyme system found in bacteriophages.”
