Society's cognitive dependence on AI.
A massive paper from Harvard and many other top universities.
A small increase in LLM adoption could trigger a much larger jump in cognitive dependence on AI, so the paper argues we should protect independent reasoning before that tipping point.
The paper treats AI dependence as a feedback problem. As more people hand reading, writing, reasoning, or verification to LLMs, the habits that keep those skills active can weaken too.
That creates a possible tipping point. Adoption can rise gradually, then suddenly settle into a state where much more thinking is outsourced. Once that happens, simply reducing AI use may not restore the old level of independence.
