Stripe buys OpenRouter for ~$7.5 B.
Now Stripe could influence an AI application's unit economics from both directions. Its payment stack sees how the application gets paid, while OpenRouter decides which model should handle a request at what cost.
It would pull Stripe deeper into product operations, where replacing it would disturb both billing and inference behavior.
The faster model companies improve and undercut one another, the more valuable the layer above them becomes.
Application companies do not want to rebuild their products every time a better or cheaper model appears, so a router that continuously shifts traffic across providers will turn model competition into an advantage for the customer.
Stripe will end up controlling an unusually important junction between the cost of intelligence and the revenue generated from it.
